Headaches and Migraines? We can help!

Headaches occur across populations and are extremely common—according to the World Health Organization, an estimated 47 percent of the worldwide adult population experienced a headache at least one time in the past year. While there are more than 200 kinds of headaches, the “Tension Type Headache” is the most frequently seen.

Headaches can be caused from structural or biochemical changes in our bodies. There are many different causes of headaches, but as chiropractors, we look at the three Ts: trauma, toxins and thoughts. Trauma consists of accidents and injuries; toxins from chemical exposure, everyday skin and beauty products, food additives and alcohol; thoughts are emotional and mental factors like stress, anxiety and depression.

As chiropractors, we are able to re-align vertebrae in your neck to allow optimal nerve flow which may be causing the headaches. If the issue is more biochemical, taking supplements such as B Vitamins, OPC and Magnesium will be helpful to decrease the frequency and intensity of the migraines and headaches. Sufficient water intake is also very important to help keep balance in our bodies. Nutrition, well alignment and exercise are all crucial to help to decrease your headaches!

These are my kids, Blake (4) and Jax (1.5).  They’ve each been adjusted regularly since birth.  Blake was stuck during birth, and the doctor had to basically dislocate his shoulder in order to pull him out (formally called shoulder dystocia).  He ended up with a mild case of torticollis where his neck muscles were in spasm and contracting so much that his head was stuck to the right, and any time I tried to move his head back to center he would fuss, cry and resist.  I adjusted him about a half hour after he was born–very gently–using about the same pressure as you would use to check the ripeness of a tomato.

Within 5 minutes, he was holding his head straight without a problem!

Jax had a great birth.  I checked him out when he was 1 day old, and he was fine.  However, boys will be boys.  They run and jump off our furniture, climb on things that shouldn’t be climbed on, slip and fall, and they wrestle with each other like they’re training for the Olympics.  They need to be checked out regularly to put things back in place.

I want to give my kids the best opportunity to thrive and succeed, and there is no way having a poor spine will ever keep my kids from doing their best–at anything.  I want to set my kids up for a lifetime of a healthy spine by influencing their spines while they are still developing, which is the best time to address the spine.

At its most basic level, chiropractic helps healthy kids stay healthy, growing and developing a straighter spine.  In addition to that, chiropractic may help with many conditions that parents aren’t even aware of–conditions that I didn’t even know a chiropractor could help with until I became one:

  • Colic
  • Ear infections
  • Torticollis
  • Better sleep
  • Improved behavior and attitude
  • Enhanced immune system
  • Asthma
  • Digestive problems
  • Problems breast feeding

It is always easier to keep a healthy spine healthy than to try to fix a broken one.  You take your kids in to the dentist, why not a chiropractor?  It is safe, gentle and effective.  It protects one of the most important parts of our body–the spinal cord and nervous system.

Get your kids in for a checkup!

What Position does Chiropractic Play in Sports?

The Edge. Performance. Prevention. Future.

You’re an athlete.  You play football.  Here’s what you know the first question everybody asks you is: “What position do you play?”

Well that’s the question I’m going to answer for you regarding chiropractic–what position does chiropractic play in sports?  The answer is we play the position of the edge.  We give you the edge, and it’s the edge in three areas: performance, prevention and future.

First of all, chiropractic gives you the edge in performance.

Chiropractic can give you as much as a–look at this–ten percent difference in performance.  You understand that 10% is a lot!  10% better is something that every athlete wants.

You may know that an Olympic Gold Medalist in the Decathlon is known as the greatest athlete in the world.  They have to be great at ten different fields of Track & Field.  They put their bodies through unbelievable stress and strain to be at the top of their game.

Dan O’Brien, Olympic Gold Medalist in the Decathlon, said, “Chiropractic is essential for running.  If I could put a percentage value on it I would say that I compete 8-10% better from regular chiropractic care.”

Parents–if you could buy tennis shoes that would increase your kids’ performance by 10%, would you buy them?  As a matter of fact, if there was any piece of equipment that you could buy for your kid that would increase their performance by 10%, would you even hesitate?  The answer is obviously no because you want your kids to win.

You want your kids to start.  You want your team to have the edge.  In the Olympics, often times the difference between a gold and silver medal is .01 or one hundredth of a second.  They say football is a game of inches.  A 10% chiropractic edge could be a big deal.

It can make the difference between starting or not, getting that scholarship or not, winning that championship or not, or recovering from an injury to play that game or not.  Now that we have slow motion in all professional sports, the difference between safe and out is often so close that it can’t be seen unless we slow it down and look at it again.

“Obviously I’m sold on that 10%,” you’re thinking, “but how does chiropractic do that?”

The brain communicates to all parts of the body through a central nervous system.  It communicates through nerves that are housed and encased in your spine, and the communication through those nerves determines how quickly and accurately your body moves and reacts.  It is essential that this communication is 100% or the body will obviously not perform at 100% because it doesn’t get the communication it needs.

Look at it just like your cellphone.  You know how frustrating it is if you’ve ever gotten an important call and it gets fuzzy from poor reception.  One phone call that should’ve been 2 minutes turns into 5 minutes because it keeps cutting out–because the communication isn’t good and there is interference.  That is how the body works.  It relies on that same line of communication, and when there’s interference to that line the brain cannot communicate to the rest of the organs, resulting in slower reaction times and less accurate movements.

What causes this nerve interference for the body like it does a cell phone?  The answer is daily-ness of life.  It’s just you.  It’s what you do.  OSHA, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, stated that by the age of 13 you have already experienced over 1,000 traumas to your spine, and if you’re a competitive athlete, that number goes up significantly.  It’s these traumas that cause misalignments of the spine, which then causes nerve interference so that your brain cannot communicate properly to the rest of the body.  The result–decreased performance.

Nerve interference can disrupt cardiovascular and respiratory function because of poor nerve communication.  It means less wind and more fatigue.  Do you want that for your athlete?

Chiropractic adjustments correct nerve interference by re-aligning the vertebrae to take pressure off the nerves, among other benefits, resulting in 100% communication like a cellphone.  A research study of 100 athletes was done to test the effect chiropractic has on athletic performance.  50 of the athletes received chiropractic care, and 50 of the athletes did not.  They were tested before and after six weeks of training.  The group that did not receive chiropractic care improved by less than 1%, even after six weeks of training.  The group receiving regular chiropractic care improved by almost 18%.

Michael Jordan said, “I didn’t know how much I could improve until I started seeing a chiropractor.”  WOW!  “Since I’ve been in chiropractic I’ve improved by leaps and bounds both mentally and physically.”

Tom Brady said, “As long as I see the chiropractor I feel like I am one step ahead of the game.”

Aaron Rodgers said, “Performing at my best is important to me and should be to everyone.  I am blessed that my dad is a chiropractor.  Getting adjusted regularly–along with practicing other good health habits that my mom helped me to establish–are all part of my goal to win in life and on the field.”

Evander Holyfield said, “I have to have an adjustment before I go into the ring.  I found that going to the chiropractor three times a week helps my performance.  The majority of boxers go to get that edge.”

The second edge that chiropractic provides is prevention.

This means the edge in prevention of injuries and also faster healing.  World renowned exercise physiologist, Dr. Sean Atkins, said, “I would estimate that at least 90% of world-class athletes use chiropractic on a regular basis to prevent injuries and to improve their performance.”

Dan O’Brien said, “You obviously can’t compete at your fullest if you’re not in alignment, and your body cannot heal if you’re not in alignment.  Every Track & Field athlete that I have ever met has seen a chiropractor.  In Track & Field it is absolutely essential.”

25 million people visit a doctor for athletic injuries, costing $67 billion, according to US News & World Report.  If you care about yourself as an athlete or you have a child who is an athlete, no matter how talented they are, no matter how strong they are, no matter how great they are at their sport–an injury can undo all of it.  An injury can erase talent.  It can change the whole future of an athlete.  That means that you need to do all the injury prevention you can possibly do to preserve that athlete.

In The Journal of Neurological Science it says, “The quality of healing is directly proportional to the function capability of the nervous system to send and receive nerve messages.”  How clear is that?

The third edge which chiropractic gives athletes is the future.

There’s no question that sports are a lot of fun.  We wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t fun, but it also causes a lot of stress, strain and trauma to the body.  If that stress, strain and trauma is left untreated, the accumulation of these traumas over a decade or two of sports can be brutal to that athlete in later years.

This part usually doesn’t happen while you’re playing that sport.  It happens in later years.  If your child doesn’t regularly brush his or her teeth, they feel fine for a long time.  Eventually, however, they’re going to lose all their teeth.  The teeth are going, going, gone.

Everything wears out.  The same is true with the traumas of the body.  Go ahead for your athletes–they’re young and strong right now–leave it untreated.  You might not see the results right away, but you’re going to see the results in later years.

The majority of professional athletes have almost no mobility and are many times in great pain later in life.  A Washington Post survey of more than 500 retired NFL athletes found that 9 in 10 of them reported suffering from aches and pains on a daily basis.  By the way, that 1 in 10 who did not report suffering was probably the kicker.

“I can’t run anymore,” says Pete Kindle, age 39.  “I can’t play basketball with my kids.  I can’t walk for any extended distance.”  Roman Oben says, “I’m 40 years old going on 65.  God knows what I’ll feel like when I’m actually 65 years old.”  Pretty compelling isn’t it?

Now, I understand that these are professional athletes who will most likely have spent more time throughout life beating up their bodies compared to most children in sports who do not make it to the professional level.  Nevertheless the amplification with professional sports allows you to see the true ramifications of leaving it untreated.  The truth is you want your kids to be able to play with their kids when they are 50, when they’re 65, even when they’re 85.  In today’s day and time, they’re destined to live over 100 with the ever-growing life expectancy.

They need to be treating the wear-and-tear of sports on their body with regular chiropractic care.  They are going to outlive their sport.  They are going to need their mobility longer than they play organized sports.  Chiropractic is what you need for the future.

You want chiropractic to provide your athlete the edge.  Chiropractic plays the position of improving performance by as much as 10%, preventing injuries, speeding up healing and preserving your future.

Healthy Aging Tips

People are living longer these days.  40,000 Americans are 100 or older!  It’s the fastest-growing sub-population of the elderly.  In 2050, census projections estimate 1 million Americans will celebrate their 100th birthdays!

With long life comes challenges, mental and physical.  Every day, we see the affects of aging in our clinic, the biggest neglect being our spines.

If our spine was located on our face, everyone would take better care of it.  It’s time for you to start thinking about what it means for you, your children and your grandchildren to live a very long time!

1. See a chiropractor regularly to slow the progression of arthritis, which is nothing more than abnormal wear and tear and degeneration of our joints.

2. Think positively.  It can add life to your years and years to your life, not to mention improving your immune and cardiovascular health.

3. Stimulate your mind socially and educationally.  Keep reading, and get together with friends routinely to play cards or other games.

4. Exercise regularly.  A 30-minute walk, swim, bike, hike or jog will do the trick.  However, recent studies indicate that 10-20 minute high-intensity burst exercises yield even better results for losing weight, controlling glucose levels and lowering blood pressure.  Google tabata.

5. Get your regular healthcare exams.  Get in for your routine medical, eye, dental, chiropractic and other exams.  It can save you the agony of catching problems when they are out of control and difficult to fix.

6. Eat & drink healthy, and take supplements that reduce the effects of aging.

Panic! Your Body Needs to Detox.

Detox.  It’s a concept that is somewhat self-explanatory, but yet so much more complex than most people think it is.

What is it not?  A detox program is not a “bowel cleanse” or a calorie-restricted plan.  It is not a juice fast.

What is it?  A detox program is a complete, whole-body program that uses healthy foods, medical foods and supplements to pull stored toxins out of tissues, improve the function of your liver to break down those toxins more efficiently and get your kidneys and bowels to eliminate the toxins.

Toxins accumulate in your body, especially in built-up fat cells, and include chemicals, heavy metals and other unnecessary junk from processed foods, pesticides and medications that we ingest, polluted air we breathe and even cleaning products and personal care products that we use around the house.  Toxins can build up to become a contributing factor to some chronic diseases, fibromyalgia, our mood, cognition, behavior, energy levels, neurological problems, thyroid disorders, sleep problems, chronic infection, unnecessary weight gain and much more!

What can you do?  (1) Reduce your exposure to toxins and make healthy lifestyle choices.  (2) Regular physician-supervised detox programs.

Our detox program is science-based, clinically tested, individualized for you and includes medical foods and supplements specific for detoxification, as well as physician-supervised dietary modifications.

Snow Shoveling Tips to Prevent Back Injury

One of the most common causes for back injuries during the winter months is snow removal.  Using improper body mechanics can lead to a painful muscle strain or even more serious problems such as a disc herniation.  You may think you are tough, but trust me, even the toughest people can literally fall to their knees.  I know–I’ve had to pick them up and put them back together again.

Ergonomic Snow Shovels

A snow shovel with a curved handle or an adjustable length can minimize bending.  Also, the lighter weight shovel that you use, the less overall weight you are lifting.

Warm Up Thoroughly

Cold, tight muscles are more injury prone than warm, flexible muscles.  Get your blood pumping with a brisk 5-10 minute walk or other warm-up activity, then stretch your low back and hamstrings and give yourself a hug for an upper back stretch.

Take Your Time

Take a look at the amount of snow and tailor your strategy ahead of time based on the amount of snow and its density.  Adapt your pathways or take snow off the top in layers if you’re dealing with a heavier snow fall in order to reduce your load.  Don’t be afraid to take a break!

Use Ergonomically Correct Lifting Techniques

Whenever possible, push snow to the side without hunching over instead of picking it up and throwing it.  When lifting/throwing snow is necessary:

  • Face towards the direction you are lifting/throwing and avoid twisting
  • Bend at the hips and knees, not the back
  • Push your chest out to keep your back straight
  • For heavier loads, place one hand as close to the blade as possible
  • Keep the heaviest part of the shovel close to your body
  • Limit your arm extension when throwing snow

Happy Holidays!

Oral vs. Spinal Maintenance

Oral and spinal maintenance can make a big difference! Most people think it would be completely crazy to never see your dentist for cleanings and maintenance to prevent cavities and decay.  Then is it crazy to have your spine, which houses THE MOST IMPORTANT life source within you–your spinal cord–which controls everything in your entire body, checked routinely for misalignments?!  We think not.

Your health care is ultimately your choice.  We make recommendations specific to each person to keep your spine as healthy as possible throughout your life and prevent or slow spinal decay, similar to the dental model of tooth decay.

You brush and floss daily.  You get your six-month or three month teeth cleanings.  Every so often you get X-rays, fluoride treatments and other procedures based off your current oral health and your dentist’s recommendations.  We too look at each person’s unique spinal health, alignment, posture, daily activities and history of injury.  From there, we recommend exercises specific for you, and we recommend the proper time interval in between your chiropractic maintenance appointments.

Arthritis and spinal disorders are the #1 and #2 causes of disability in the United States.  A chiropractic maintenance program is one of the best health investments you can make.

Sports Chiropractic… oh and Aaron Rodgers

aaron-rodgersIt’s that time of year again.  Go Packers!  Did you know Aaron Rodgers’ dad is a chiropractor?

“I am blessed that my dad is a chiropractor,” Rodgers said.  “Getting adjusted regularly–along with practicing other good health habits that my mom helped me to establish–are all part of my goal to win in life and on the field.”

The Chiropractic Advantage began treating student athletes regularly at Little Chute High School last spring, hosting office hours in the school sports training room and seeing more troublesome cases in clinic.  The school’s athletic trainer, Brian Milnarich, has been amazing to work with, and together we have seen great results with the athletes.  We look forward to another exciting year of sports coming up!

Our doctors at The Chiropractic Advantage are also the official team chiropractors of the Appleton Knights, a local semi-pro football team.  We are proud to say that we won our second straight NXFL championship this year!

Drs. Tyler Skibba and Brent Buss at The Chiropractic Advantage are both Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioners (CCEP), specialists in arm and leg treatment, and they use it to their advantage when treating athletes.  We recommend regular checkups for athletes to maintain proper spinal and extremity alignment and mobility, as well as proper nervous system function.  The result is optimal mobility, accuracy and precision with very specific athletic movements, maximizing athletic ability and preventing injuries.  Many children are unaware of spinal misalignment and mobility problems because they are not in pain.  It is well worth having your children examined by a chiropractor for those reasons.  Surely, Aaron Rodgers can attest to that!
